King David Kalakaua was responsible for the Merrie Monarch Festival and the Hawaiian Renaissance. We wouldn't have the language, dance, and culture that we do today if not for him. As such, in Hilo, across from the East Hawaii Cultural Center rests Kalakaua Park with a statue in his honor. At each end of the park rested a banyan tree. Unfortunately the one on the makai side was breaking apart the rock wall and threatening the buildings beyond, so it was cut.
From the wood of this tree we have made a limited run of keychains, honoring the park, David Kalakaua, and the place in history this banyan tree honored.
