Mano Shark – In ancient days, Hawaiian Ali’i (chiefs) would jump into the ocean to wrestle with these dangerous creatures. This practice is not recommend! In the early 1900's Hawai'i's local newspapers also have photos portraying "shark races" where they would put a rope around a hammerhead and sit on them, "racing" across the bay. Either way these creatures are held in high regard, with their teeth being a major part of lua weaponry, and the symbols of their teeth being part of many warriors as a sign of protection. Many legends tell of sharks which would help guide lost canoes back into the bay.
